What to bring to visit Grotte de Niaux

For a comfortable visit, bring walking or sports shoes and warm clothing, as the temperature inside the cave never exceeds 12°C. Walking sticks, backpacks and cameras are forbidden to preserve the integrity of the site. The cave is neither equipped nor lit. The 1.6 km route is hilly and must be completed in a limited time. Consequently, the tour is not accessible to people with reduced mobility or to children under 6, due to the length of the route and the inaccessibility of strollers. Animals are not allowed on site.

The gallery of paintings in the Niaux cave

Get ready for an exceptional prehistoric adventure lasting around 1 hour 45 minutes. Treasures hidden for millennia await you! The Niaux cave is one of the most famous decorated caves in France, alongside Lascaux and Chauvet.

Accompanied by a guide, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the first Prehistoric painters. The cave paintings, created some 17,000 years ago, are painted directly onto the rock. The cave covers more than 2 km of spacious galleries, natural concretions, underground lakes and vaults several meters high, where hundreds of mysterious signs and animal representations by Cro-Magnon man have been discovered.

Don’t miss the “Sign Panel”, a set of geometric signs painted in red, the meaning of which remains a mystery. The highlight of the visit is the “Salon Noir”, where over 70 paintings of animals such as bison, horses, deer and ibex are beautifully preserved. It is also possible to observe graffiti left by other visitors, although this practice is strictly forbidden today, as attested by a graffiti dating back to 1602.
