Les Terrasses du Pech in Ariège
The Terrasses du Pech de Foix in Ariège is the perfect place to explore on a short hike during your vacation at Camping Des Grottes. Departing from the old bridge in Foix, this discovery trail was created in 2013 and allows you to discover magnificent landscapes thanks to numerous terraces and the history of the blue bird on the Foix mountain. With a distance of around four kilometers, including a loop on the terraces section, and a DCP of 377 meters, it is accessible to all.
What are terraces in Ariège?
Men have carved out the mountain to form these famous “terraces” to gain a little space for cultivation. The terraces are bordered by beautiful dry-stone walls that have been restored by specialists. On this hike, it’s essential to respect the rich history of these walls, which make up the beauty of Ariege’s heritage.
The path to follow on Les Terrasses du Pech in Ariège
From Le Vieux Pont, take the porch and start your hike along the so-called “asparagus path” (in reference to the plant commonly found growing wild on the hillside), then follow the GR107 des Bonshommes and the sentier Cathare to a crossroads marked by a dry-stone building with a large explanatory panel. The higher you climb, the more incredible the panorama over the Ariège. The finish line is at the top of the loop, where you can see and contemplate the ruins of the old houses of the village of Pech. Don’t forget your picnic to enjoy the 360° view over the Ariège countryside and mountains.
